The 2002 Chevrolet Malibu is available in two trims: Base and LS 4-door sedans. Standard safety features include dual airbags, an anti-lock brake system (ABS), daytime running lights with automatic exterior light control, and child safety locks. The standard engine on both trims is a 3.1-liter V6 producing 170 horsepower, mated to a standard 4-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Other standard features include air conditioning, power door locks, a theft-deterrent system, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, floor mats and an AM/FM stereo with CD player. The LS adds power windows, cruise control, Radio Data System, a power driver's seat, fog lights and 15-inch aluminum wheels. The LS can be upgraded further with leather seats.
