The Malibu name was first used by Chevrolet in 1964 for the top series models in the Chevelle line, and the Malibu line continued through the 1983 model year. The current Malibu was introduced as an all-new, front-wheel-drive midsize sedan for the 1997 model year.

The Malibu took the place of the discontinued Corsica and falls between the Cavalier and the Lumina in the Chevrolet lineup. Given the competitive nature of the midsize sedan market, Chevrolet has given Malibu a high level of standard equipment and priced it aggressively. The automaker expects nearly three-quarters of Malibu buyers to be married, and nearly half of these to have children.
