The Ford Focus is completely new from the ground up. The car was designed and engineered in Europe, and has already been introduced there as a replacement for the Ford Escort, which is similar to the U.S. Escort only in name(it is a much sportier, better handling car in Europe).

It is another example of a "world" car (available in North America, Europe, and Asia), just like the Ford Mondeo, which is sold here as the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique. Those vehicles never quite lived up to their hype/development costs, but Ford is trying to rectify that with the Focus. It will be available in a ZX-3 3-door hatchback, LX, SE, and ZTS 4-door sedan, and SE 4-door wagon.
